Welcome to the Travel Photography Awards

Travel Photographer was founded by Chris and Karen Coe in 2003.

After years of working as a professional photographer, much of the time in the travel industry, and often finding that only travel conventional images made it into print, Chris decided to create a way to showcase great travel photography and broaden people's perception of the breadth of subjects which travel photography encompasses. We wanted to show the world that travel photography can be much, much more than pretty postcard images in the media or holiday company brochure shots.

Photography likes to pigeonhole photographers into a certain type of image and subject matter, but travel photography encompasses many different subjects from landscape to food, from architecture to people and from reportage to wildlife. With this diversity, travel photographers need to be able to take many differing types of imagery and work in vastly diverse light. The stunning imagery which the awards have showcased to date clearly illustrates the skill and diversity of imagery which falls into the travel genre.

In the very early days, TPOTY was run from our home, which, each year was taken over by thousands and thousands of prints sent from around the world.

Today, TPOTY is run from an office in the Suffolk countryside, which is renowned for its good weather and big skies. From our windows the TPOTY team have a view which rivals some of those shown in the images we receive.

Although the competition has grown, we have tried to keep a friendly, personal touch to everything. The pleasure we get in receiving some amazing images from photographers around the world is as great as ever.

Over the years we've seen the work of many evolve and it gives us a particular thrill to see how entrants take on the challenge each year. TPOTY is about images and we would like to thank everyone who has entered, and will enter, over the years for the pleasure which your involvement has given to us and many others on this particular journey.
