Deborah Benbrook turned professional just 12 months ago after redundancy from her marketing role at a high street bank. Since then she has travelled to Iceland, Morocco and Kenya and has built up a collection of 4,600 images at various stock libraries. Her work is regularly used in travel brochures, magazine and publications around the world.
Deborah is a self taught photographic artist based in Leeds, West Yorkshire. She believes that being self taught gives her the advantage over other photographers because ‘it broadens the mind, you learn through experience and you’re allowed to experiment, rather than being told how things should be done.’
She doesn't believe a picture should be accompanied by the usual arty clap trap about why the picture was taken or what it means; a good picture speaks a thousand words by itself and that is what she believes she produces.

Born in Israel, currently based in Edinburgh where I am completing a BA in Photography, Film and Imaging. As a self taught photographer prior to university and throughout my studies, I have travelled and photographed out of a personal spiritual quest, observing the infinite unique variations of the one.
My travel photographs have been published in national and international travel and photographic magazines, and a few articles too, while I expand my collection to include performance and studio-based work as well.Within general destination imagery I am moving further into cultural studies, documenting changes in life as societies shift and reconstruct themselves with the times.
In the 2005/06 "Professional Photographer of the year" competition by
'Professional Photographer' magazine, I won first prize in the Landscape student category, and in TPOTY 2006 my portfolio of the French Alps was rated 5th in the Wild category.

A fascination with natural light and a passion with nature, landscape and travel underpin Chris's photography and give a striking simplicity and graphic quality to his imagery.
Since turning professional in 1992, Chris has photographed landscapes, people, architecture, gardens, travel destinations and wildlife around the world. This ability and desire to capture such a diverse range of subjects and explore different types of photography is rare amongst photographers, but Chris finds shooting different subjects and styles both visually stimulating and challenging.
Most of his work is commissioned for specific advertising and editorial projects or for stock libraries. He has shot over 40 travel and coffee table books and has undertaken commissions for a wide range of major multinational companies. His images have been widely published in newspapers, magazines and books, and his book ‘The Art of Landscape Photography' is a widely-used reference work. Chris is current finishing a new book called 'Creative DSLR Photography' with co-author, Chris Weston.
He has presented photographic features for TV and he lectures on a variety of photographic subjects, including travel, landscape and stock photography, at numerous major international conferences. He has also written articles about photography for specialist photographic, travel and lifestyle magazines.
Together with fellow professional photographers and friends, Nick Meers and Chris Weston, and digital imaging expert, Terry Steeley, Chris runs the Photo Iconic series of photography and digital imaging courses in the UK and overseas, covering everything you need to know about photography to enjoy it as a hobby, as a profession or to get started as a new career.
In 2003, Chris founded the now prestigious international Travel Photographer of the Year awards.

Phil was born on the edge of the English Lake District which probably explains his affinity with mountains. He began walking the fells at the age of 12 and climbing the crags whilst still at school.
A teenager in the 1960’s he soon learnt that you could travel just about anywhere at anytime. All you needed was a thumb and a friendly smile. As a student he hitch-hiked across the US on Route 66 and was later shot at in Canada trying to hop a freight train.
Since then his travels and his photography have taken him to all seven continents including both polar regions. Initially photography was simply an extension of his travels, then it became a means of financing further travelling, now he says “it’s just something that I do and don’t know how to stop”.
He is currently based on the edge of the North York Moors where he continues to be fascinated by wild county and ever-changing light.

Stephen is a part time photographer who only turned professional in the last couple of years. Nevertheless he has already been a finalist in several international photography competitions. Stephen had one image from his 2005 entry to the Travel Photographer of the Year published in the “Journey One” portfolio.
Stephen’s images predominantly show his passion for all things nature, although his collection is interspersed with a growing number of travel images. Stephen’s particular interest is in polar and sub-polar regions, with Alaska and Canada’s Yukon Territory being favourite destinations.
Images of these and Stephen’s other photographs have been published internationally and a small selection, typical of the images in his collection, are displayed on his website. These are available for purchase as fine art prints, or, along with the rest of Stephen’s collection, available for editorial purposes, calendars and books. A growing selection of Stephen’s images is also held by stock agencies.
Despite juggling his love of photography with a full time job, Stephen’s image library continues to grow as a result of exploring his local patch and through travelling around the world.

Steven is a New York-based photojournalist specialising in documentary and travel photography.
After wandering for the past 15 years, I now call New York City "home." Born in England, raised in Bermuda and educated in America, I have spent the last 15 years clutching both camera and passport. Although trained as a lawyer, with an Honors B.A. from the University of Florida and a J.D. from the University of Miami School of Law, photography and travel remain my inspiration. There are few things that offer such experiences and it is through the viewfinder of a 35mm and digital SLR that I have seen much of the world. From spectacular sunsets in the Sahara to the advent of dawn over the Indian Ganges to Rajasthani bar-room brawls, my camera has fueled my vision-quest. Photography has made of me a more earnest traveler. Through it, I have learned patience, humility and compassion. These virtues, I seek to convey through my work.
My work has been displayed in San Francisco, New Orleans, Miami, London and New York. I am currently an intern at VII Photo Agency and continue to do freelance work.

"Since the age of twelve, photography in many forms has dominated my life and a previous career was as a UK network broadcast television cameraman and lighting director.
Now I am a professional travel photographer and have been to many countries, most recently Japan, Argentina and Chile. In London, Tokyo and Kyoto I have had photographic exhibitions of Japan, Taiwan, Cook Islands and Tonga.
What I look for in a picture is a combination of the light and how it plays on the subject as well as a dynamic composition but mostly a visual story that reaches out and involves me.”

Swiss-born Felix Hug has gone from winning trophies as a professional basketball player to winning awards as a professional travel photographer for some of the world's best-known airlines, hotels and resorts.
His awards include Second Prize at the 2007 Travel Photographer of the Year awards (Thrill category), First Prize at the International Photography Awards (IPA) in 2005, a Gold Award & Best of Show selection at the Australian Professional Photography Awards in 2005 and the Asian Geographic Nikon Grand Prize in 2004.

As a result, he is sought after by the world's top travel brands. His list of blue-chip clients include Lonely Planet Library, Singapore Airlines/Silk Air, Raffles Hotels and Resorts, Silversands at the W Retreat and Spa in Maldives, Bank Julius Baer Singapore and Universal Resorts in the Maldives.

Gerard Kingma, Netherlands
|
|
|
|
|

|
“Over the centuries, the inhabitants of the province of Groningen, The Netherlands, have reclaimed their land from the sea. It is a man-made world. New land is reclaimed outside of the dikes that keep the sea at bay, and as new land is formed, the original dikes lose their function. Farmers create passages through the dikes. It is an unforgiving world, where farmers work hard to earn a living from the land. Stray sunflowers, grown from spilled cattle feed, are totally out of place. But on an early winter morning with a bit of hoar frost, the landscape takes on an eerie beauty
As a travel and landscape photographer, I try to define what makes a particular landscape unique, what sets it apart from others. This is my homeland; it is flat, almost featureless. Folks that live here don't much care for trees. But here you can breathe. The vast expanse of sky envelopes you and gives you a sense of freedom. That's how my most successful image to date came about - the image of the jumping lamb that won me a trip to the Bahamas, as winner of the TPOTY 2005 Single Image category - 'A Moment of Freedom'.”

The two greatest passions in Larry Louie's life are travel and photography. “Both broaden one's view of the world. Travel helps us develop tolerance and appreciation of others and ourselves. Our world and all the people are interconnected - we are individually all different and yet the same. My photographs documents my journey in life and allows me to share with others the diversity and beauty of the world I see.”
Larry’s love for photography and travel had developed at a very young age with his first National Geographic Magazine. Born in Hong Kong and raised in Edmonton, Canada, Larry Louie was educated as a doctor of optometry. His journey into photography started right in his own backyard. He would photograph the “down and out” people of his home city Edmonton – like his series of Homeless Men. He would even monitor police frequencies so he could run out to photograph burnt buildings. And of course, his love for nature and the outdoors brought him and his camera to the Rocky Mountains of Alberta quite frequently.
After optometry school, Larry experienced a renewed enthusiasm and appreciation for photography, especially black and white photography and photojournalism after viewing an exhibition in New York’s Guggenheim Museum of Josef Koudelka’s work. He also discovered another problem: he likes his profession as an optometrist, but also likes to travel and photograph. He, therefore, has decided to split his time between his optometry practice and his passion for travel & photography.
Larry takes several trips a year to many different places around the world. His special interests are in places far off the beaten path where the indigenous people and their culture and practices are rapidly becoming extinct. Over the years, Larry had received many awards and recognition for his work, including, in October 2007, a Lucie Award for his series in the Tibetan Grassland.

Winner of the Travel Photographer of the Year 2006 and voted runner-up Professional Photographer of the Year by Wanderlust magazine, Julian Love's work is highly regarded. The judges praised his "crisp, clean, graphic images" demonstrating "a fresh eye for composition, good use of light and a sense of timing".
Inspired by the adventure photography of Galen Rowell, the sensitive portraits of Steve McCurry and the colourful and irreverent photography of Martin Parr, Julian's versatility is one of his great strengths. He is equally at home shooting the wild landscapes of the Sahara or the streets of Cairo as he is lending a fresh eye to the familiar in his home city of London. Julian's work has appeared in a number of magazines, books and brochures.
Julian's award-winning images can be seen in the 2006 Winners' Gallery.

"T.S. Elliot once said" the journey, not the arrival matters", which embodies how I've felt for the past eight years while leading photography tours to some of the most interesting places on our planet.
I have led tours to most of Southeast Asia - Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, India, Bhutan, Nepal and Myanmar. In 2007 I added the recently completed 'Semana Santa' workshop in my hometown of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico and will be adding Peru as a new destination for 2008.
Exploring, learning and sharing have not only made me a better photographer, but a better person."
In 2003 Michael Matlach won the Colour & Passion category in TPOTY. His winning images appear in the 2003 Winners' Gallery.

Andrew was born in 1978, in Shropshire, England. For many years he had a desire to express his creativity and tried his hand at many different art forms. It was only after returning home from his first around the world trip with some mediocre pictures, that he decided to study photography.
His first camera was a Canon EOS 300 S.L.R and after some experimentation, undertaking a few courses to learn the fundamentals and teaching himself the rest, his ambition was to combine photography with his love of travelling. It has taken him to many beautiful, interesting and cultural locations around the world, with every trip providing a new challenge; creatively, physically and emotionally.
Although he has an extremely diverse style of photography, his passion is in capturing the first or last light on the landscape, but is equally happy shooting street life, people and details in crowded, bustling markets. He shoots primarily for stock and is represented by image libraries around the world. His work is used for anything from editorial to advertising and has been published in books, magazines and travel guides worldwide. Andrew's dream, along with every other travel photographer's on the planet, to work for National Geographic, has finally come true, now that he has been added to their list of active travel photographers.

Tony Pick specialises in images that portray the characteristics of the Suffolk Coast and depict the warmth and isolation through the seasons, with subject matter including boats, atmospheric landscapes, seascapes and the inevitable stormy North Sea. After a successful career as a press photographer, Tony relocated to the Suffolk coast in 1991. It was here that he fulfilled his dream of opening his own gallery selling his own seascape and landscape work.
"The coastline around Aldeburgh is the most beautiful stretch in the country, in my opinion. It has given me marvellous scope for some truly stunning images which I have loved taking".
Working on the East coast and as part of a strong community led Tony to become a volunteer member of the Aldeburgh lifeboat crew. He has taken some beautiful images of the boat, in particular of a 'rough weather' launch, and donated 20% of all the sales from this image to the RNLI.
All Tony's work can be found on his website, or by visiting the gallery at 127 High St, Aldeburgh, Suffolk, England.

Lorne Resnick was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. His passion for travel and photography keeps him moving around the globe exploring different cultures and countries, capturing unique moments with his camera.
He began his career photographing rock concerts in his home town of Toronto, capturing peak moments in the all-consuming fire and flash that is live rock and roll, featuring performers from Bruce Springsteen to Madonna. These images were published in his first book: “Live in Concert – 10 years of Rock and Roll”.
Resnick’s striking commercial and fine art images have been exhibited in galleries across Europe and America, and have been used commercially for annual reports, billboards, television, web sites and for worldwide advertising campaigns.
From his first book of photographs, “Live in Concert: 10 years of Rock and Roll”, published in 1987, to his latest work-in-progress, Cuba Dreaming, scheduled for publication in 2006, Lorne Resnick has always strived to create images that probe beyond the everyday facade to capture the essential meaning and character of his subjects.
Resnick lives and works in Los Angeles as a commercial and fine art photographer - when not being nibbled on by small baby tigers, elephants and his newborn son.

A love for meeting and seeing people and places (which he reckons covers just about everything) led him to start recording it all on film. He’s at his happiest when in the middle of some wild festival with his camera. Charlie has published his photography and written articles for magazines and newspapers in the UK and worldwide, picking up the occasional award along the way and was included in the inaugural TPOTY ‘Journey One’ book as a ‘Judges Favourite’.
While Charlie now enjoys photographing weddings (a different sort of festival but also wild at times) and general commercial photography, he is still out exploring the world through his lens every chance he gets.

Martin was first inspired to photograph landscapes with his first, Russian, camera in the seventies. His early work focused on the UK and Europe but as he travelled further a field he became and remains more fascinated by the exotic and the unseen.
In the mid-nineties, inspired by some of Australia’s finest landscape photographers, he developed an interest in world panoramas. Since then he has embraced the power of digital imaging to powerful effect. In his recent work, subjects have ranged form the eerie icescapes of the High Arctic, through the rusty cars of Route 66, to the urban landscapes of central Havana and the indigenous tribes of remote Africa and Oceania. By his own admission his work covers some of the world’s most and least famous places. Although self taught his work is starting to create an impact with artists, galleries and other art buyers.
In recent years and through his company World on Film he has built up a base of satisfied clients. World on Film operates out of a converted farm building at Wrotham Business Park just outside Barnet in North London.

Paul Strawson is a UK based travel photographer who from an early age had an unquenchable wanderlust – at the same time his love of photography, particularly portraiture, became an obsession. It was therefore inevitable that he would have spent the last 25 years combining these two parallel passions. To date he has visited over 60 countries, many of them repeatedly – his particular favourites being India and south east Asia.
His work is featured in editorial, book, travel and commercial publications all over the world. Photographs are available via his website as limited edition prints and for publication via the photo agencies that represent him.
His work covers all aspects of travel photography but it is portraiture that predominates above everything else. His connection and empathy with his subject is obvious in his work – “people and their cultures are endlessly fascinating” – “young or old, every face is a map and each of them has a story to tell” – “joyful, sad, and everything in between, every face is endlessly fascinating”.

"I have been interested in photography for 40 years, starting out with an early Agfa camera. Nowadays Canon, Hasselblad and Olympus have replaced that model. I am keen on all genres of photography, landscape, travel, natural history and cityscapes being some of my favourite subjects. I am a member of the Royal Photographic Society and hold an Associate (ARPS) qualification. I am also a Master of the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain (MPAGB).
I have exhibited nationally and internationally, and had four exhibitions in Essex. My next will be in January 2008, so is a work in progress. I still shoot exclusively film, Fuji being my preferred stock. I enjoy the taking of images, and the feeling of anticipation when waiting for films to return. Photography has the ability to change our world - it's a very powerful tool in the right hands."
In 2006 Ron Tear was Commended in the North of 30 Degrees category in TPOTY. His images can be seen in the 2006 Winners' Gallery.
