TPOTY Adventures - Norway & Svalbard
October 5th to 13th 2016
Norwegian coast from Bergen to Tromso then fly to Svalbard
This adventure starts in Bergen and takes us up the Norwegian coast to Tromso on board a Hurtigruten ship - the Richard With. From Tromso we fly to Spitsbergen for three nights based in Longyearbyen to explore the Svalbard peninsula.
Hurtigruten ship, Richard With, sailing through the fjords
On arrival in Bergen you'll have time to relax and explore the colourful, historic Bryggen harbour area, enjoy a drink and take lunch overlooking the quays. Bryggen is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and very photogenic.
After this relaxing start, the adventure begins when we board the Richard With in the afternoon to begin our journey north along the coast. During the four day sailing you'll have the opportunity to disembark in some of the ports on route and join excursions to photograph some of the site and landscape.
The Norwegian Coast - Bergen to Tromso
The Hurtigruten ships sail close to the coast and islands so the landscape will never be far away and in many places it will be on both sides. This coastline is beautiful, with mountains and deep fjords. We'll stop at Florø, Måløy, Torvik, Ålesund, Molde, Stokmarknes, Sortland, Risøyhamn, Harstad, Finnsnes enroute and sail through the Lofoten Islands.
Tromso by night
Each day, your photography tutor - Chris Coe - will give a talk on how to photograph everything from people to landscapes, wildlife to detail. He and his assistant, Hazel, will also be on hand to give you individual tuition as and when you want it.
An Evening in Tromso
The City of Tromso has a rich heritage and nestles in a fjord between the mountains. The ship arrives at 14:30 hrs so you'll have plenty of time to check into our hotel for the night and explore. For those of you who want to treat themslves that evening there's a midnight concert at the cathedral that evening.
After breakfast the next day we'll transfer to the nearby airport for our flight to Longyearbyen, arriving in the afternoon.
Arctic fox cub
This is wild country and there are more polar bears here on the Svalbard than there are people. October is when the snow arrives so we could be in an end of summer landscape or a white one. We'll arrive early to mid afternoon so after you've checked in to our hotel for the next three nights - Radisson Blu Polar Hotel - the rest of the day is free to explore and photograph the main town, Longyearbyen.
On the next two days we have guided excursions planned to explore the landscape and search for wildlife photo opportunities. There's also a chance that we'll see the Northern Lights. Sunset is around 17:00 hrs so an evening appearance of the dancing lights is possible and your tutor will prepare you with guidance on how to photograph them so we can just grab cameras and go if they put in an appearance.
On the last day you can have a relaxed morning before departing for the airport and the return flight.
