Steve Bloom
Beneath the Surface: From 1970’s South Africa to the World Today
Steve discusses his 1970s documentary work in apartheid South Africa and how it shaped his later career. His images of politically volatile South Africa reveal the alienation of a country on the brink of change - placing Steve among a select few photographers with the combined boldness and sensitivity of vision necessary to effectively capture the mood and charged racial climate of the time. Eighteen years later he embarked on a journey to all the world’s continents to photograph endangered wildlife, a project that resulted in several books and giant environmental exhibitions which have been seen by millions of people worldwide. In recent years he returned to Africa to photograph people across the continent, for his books Living Africa and Trading Places: The Merchants of Nairobi. This fascinating talk chronicles a photographic journey spanning more than three decades. Steve's website

He graduated with an MA and taught art school and was represented by a gallery. Nick has also won numerous awards for his books, documentary films, and for his behind-the-scenes images of political leaders, heads of state, and monarchs as well as the All Blacks rugby team.Nick's website

Mark Edward Harris
The Photo Essay & Photo Book
For travel and documentary photographers, creating original bodies of work in a series is what puts them in the spotlight and leads to magazine features, books, and exhibitions. In the magazine and gallery world, a bunch of unrelated photos, no matter how well done, can only get a photographer so far. Travel editors have a mantra that must be taken to heart before approaching a publication with an idea, “A location is not a story.” Look for stories that give the viewer an inside look into a culture by focusing on a person, a ritual, an aspect of history, the list is endless. The best photo essays are often the ones that come from a personal interest so search “inside” before you go outside looking for ideas. Your work is not complete until the images of a photo essay or from a trip are put in a form that you and others can appreciate. In recent years a number of companies have made personal photography books of high quality in a short amount of time both feasible and affordable. These books can act as a portfolio piece or just a great way to share your experiences with others. Mark's website
