Young Travel Photographer of the Year 2008
Winner — Daniel Rooney, UK
The son of a photographer, Daniel Rooney first became interested in photography about four years ago when he was given a Nikon Coolpix. He started by taking pictures in his local area and on holidays. In 2006 his parents took him out of school to travel around India, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and China for seven months. He bought a Nikon D70s to use on the trip, and this is where the four pictures in his winning portfolio were taken.
"The work of Steve McCurry inspired and influenced me during my seven month trip. I also like the work of Michael Kenna who I have studied recently in class."
Daniel has just started an A level course in Photography at Sussex Downs College and hopes one day to become a professional photographer. His father's talent is clearly being passed on - Daniel's younger brother Jordan has been commended in this year's competition.
