Travel Photographer of the Year 2021 Categories, Themes and Prizes

2021 entry – in brief

All entries must be made online (because of the global pandemic, for 2021 we will not accept print entries). A summary of the awards and categories appear below, and you will find full details on how to prepare and submit your images for online entry, together with full details of each category, and our rules, entry fees, and FAQs in our Competition section, where you will be able to register and submit your entry. Entries close at midnight (UK time) on October 12th.

The 2021 categories are:

  • Overall winner – the Travel Photographer of the Year 2021. This is the big one! The Travel Photographer of the Year 2021 will be the photographer who submits the best eight images across the portfolio categories. The Overall Winner will receive a cash bursary plus the new Fujifilm X-T4 camera and lens, a personalised Plastic Sandwich leather portfolio book, membership of the Royal Photographic Society – and the international exposure that goes with winning TPOTY. LEARN MORE
  • Young Travel Photographer of the Year 2021. ‘My Travel Album’. For photographers aged 18 and under. Prizes include £500, a personalised Plastic Sandwich leather portfolio book, a place on a Photo Iconic photography workshop and Royal Photographic Society membership. LEARN MORE
  • Best 8 portfolio. Give us eight incredible and diverse travel images, a real variety of subjects and locations, which showcase your skills as a photographer and your vision of our world. The category winner will take part in a Chris Weston – Life Changing Photography – International workshop and receive membership of the Royal Photographic Society. The recipient of the Best Single Image award receives a Genesis Imaging giclée exhibition print. LEARN MORE
  • Landscapes & Adventures portfolio. Take us on an adventure, a journey across some of this planet’s beautiful and breath-taking landscapes – from the highest peak to the lowest valley, or vast expanses of ocean from above or below, and to the most challenging or remote areas. The category winner will receive the new Fujifilm X-T4 camera and lens and membership of the Royal Photographic Society. The recipient of the Best Single Image award receives a Genesis Imaging giclée exhibition print. LEARN MORE
  • Living World portfolio. Give us a glimpse into the worlds of the non-human residents of this planet and the environments in which they live – from plankton to whales, from insects to elephants and from the smallest green shoots to giant forests. (4 images per portfolio). The category winner will receive the new Fujifilm X-T4 camera and lens and membership of the Royal Photographic Society.   • People and their Stories portfolio. The people, their lives and their cultures… all have stories to tell. Share these stories of the people and cultures you encounter on your travels. (4 images per portfolio). The category winner will receive the new Fujifilm X-T4 camera and lens and membership of the Royal Photographic Society.   • One Shot: As Shot. Only very limited digital manipulation is permitted in this category; we want to see your image – on any travel-related theme – as you shot it in-camera. The winner receives plus membership of the Royal Photographic Society. LEARN MORE
  • One Shot: Green Planet. Photographers play a vital role in documenting the threats to our planet and photography can make a huge impact on conserving and changing our planet for future generations. The winner receives plus membership of the Royal Photographic Society. LEARN MORE
  • One Shot: Icons of Travel. The classics! Whether it’s a famous landmark, an iconic mode of travel or celebration of life, show your view and vision, avoiding the picture postcard clichés.The winner receives plus membership of the Royal Photographic Society. LEARN MORE
  • Smart Shot – iTravelled. For single travel images taken on a smart phone or tablet. The winner receives £250. LEARN MORE
  • Travel Shorts. Our HD video category for films up to two minutes (120 seconds) in length. LEARN MORE
  • The People’s Choice award. Our judges will choose a selection of images from the 2021 finalists, and these will be displayed on our website for public vote. The winner receives a LEE Filters kit. LEARN MORE
