Finalist information

Many congratulations on being a finalist in the 2019 Travel Photographer of the Year awards. The standard for this year’s awards has been very high, so you have done really well to be shortlisted!

Our final round of judging starts on December 14  and will be judged on prints. We must have everything from you by December 13 at the latest. Please read all the information on this page carefully as it tells you exactly how to provide the items we need.

We need the following from you by December 13:

  1. The original/RAW image files for each shortlisted image

  2. High-resolution files of each shortlisted image

  3. Prints of each shortlisted image – these must be captioned (please note, we will not need prints for the TAPSA category – TAPSA category finalists will be notified later and prints are not required for that judging)

  4. Online captions for each image (we need these even if you have also put captions onto your prints)

  5. A finalist biography and declaration

Full details for everything we need appear below.

To view your shortlisted images, click on the ‘Shortlisted Entries PDF’ link in the finalist email you were sent. This will take you to PDF/s showing your shortlisted images. There you will find whole portfolios if a whole portfolio has been shortlisted, plus any single image category shortlisted entries. You may also find individual images from a portfolio – this is where a portfolio itself has not been shortlisted but one or more of the images from that portfolio have been shortlisted for consideration for the Best Single Image award in that portfolio category. If you need clarification as to which are your shortlisted images, please email us.

IF YOU ALSO ENTERED THE TAPSA CATEGORY, PLEASE NOTE – we do not yet have the finalists for TAPSA. If you are also a TAPSA finalist we will notify you soon – but prints will not be needed for TAPSA, so it is not so urgent!

1) THE ORIGINAL (RAW) FILES OF EACH IMAGE
This should be the image as you shot it, without any manipulation and with all metadata intact.  We always check the original files to make sure that any manipulation that may have been done is within our rules.

2) HIGH RESOLUTION FILES OF EACH IMAGE
These high-res files can be jpeg or tif (tif is best if possible) and should be the highest resolution and largest files available. Please do not downsize your files – the larger the file the bigger we can print the image if selected for our exhibitions.  If the biggest file you have is small, please do not upsize, we will do that if necessary. Please make any adjustments to the image as you would wish to see it published, but please do not sharpen it.

SUPPLYING THE FILES: You can include the RAW/original files and the high-resolution files on a CD/DVD or memory stick when you send your prints, or you can upload them to We Transfer or some other file sender or Dropbox and send the link to karen@tpoty.com.  Please do NOT email these big files to us, as we will not be able to receive them.

3) PRINTS OF EACH SHORTLISTED IMAGE
We need one print of each shortlisted image. Please make the prints no bigger than 30cm x about 22cm.  They can be smaller than this, though we suggest you don’t make them too small! They can be matte, satin or gloss finish, whichever you feel best suits your images, and can have small borders if you want. Please do not mount them on board etc.

Please include a caption on the back of each print, which must include:

  • The image category
  • Your name and nationality and email address
  • The image location (country and place)
  • The story of the image – this can be up to 120 words and should say what is in the image, what was happening when you took it etc.
  • Camera information (in this order):  type of camera, lens, f-stop, shutter speed, ISO

Please either type the caption information or write it very clearly! Please note, even if you put printed captions onto your prints we will still also need the online captions.

GETTING THE PRINTS MADE

You can print your shortlisted image/s yourself or get prints produced by your usual print maker and sent to our offices. If you want to have professional prints produced, but are not able to use your usual printing company for some reason, and are worried that you may not have time to do so and get it to us before the closing date of December 13.

If you are sending your prints direct from a print lab, and cannot caption your print/s yourself, we will use the online captions you provide (see above) and put the captions onto the prints for you.

There are many printers in the UK who can produce prints for you and send to us:

TPOTY sponsor and exhibition print producer Genesis Imaging offers a special discount off the cost of their lambda and giclee prints and a special discounted secure shipping rate to deliver prints to the TPOTY offices if you quote TPOTY in the upload message section when you upload your image to them at https://genesisimaging.co.uk/say-hello/#upload-files or email info@genesisimaging.co.uk with your queries. Genesis MUST receive your order by midday, UK time, on Tuesday December 10, if they are to deliver your prints to us in time.

Finalists also often use other professional labs such as:

The Print Space – http://www.theprintspace.co.uk  and

Metro – www.metroimaging.co.uk/

There are lots of other labs, of course. These are just suggestions.

DELIVERY ADDRESS FOR PRINTS AND MEMORY STICK/CD:

Please send everything to arrive by December 13 at the latest to:

Karen Coe, Travel Photographer of the Year, Broadway Barn, Near Hall Road, Monk Soham, Suffolk IP13 7HB, UK

If you are sending by courier and need a phone number for us for the courier, please give them +44(0)7540 725821.

4) ONLINE CAPTIONS FOR EACH IMAGE
Please also complete the online caption forms – just click on the relevant link below to be taken to the caption form for the category or categories you need.

5) FINALIST BIOGRAPHY AND DECLARATION

This is very important, as without this completed form, your prints cannot go through for final judging.
