Street

TPOTY 2026 categories

Street photography is the art of noticing what others miss. It brings the raw, unfiltered world into focus – capturing fleeting moments, layered stories, and the energy of everyday life as it unfolds. Reality doesn’t wait – and neither should you.

At its strongest, it is both documentary and interpretation. A single frame can hold atmosphere, tension, humour, or contradiction. It can be visually elegant, graphically bold, or unapologetically direct.

There is no staging. No control. Only timing, instinct, and your ability to recognise meaning in a fraction of a second.

Be ready. Be aware. Be decisive.

This category is about authentic, unscripted street life – captured as it happens. Your subject might include:

  • Candid moments of people in public spaces
  • Interactions, gestures, or expressions that suggest a story
  • The relationship between individuals and their surroundings
  • Light, shadow, movement, and timing shaping a fleeting scene
  • Details or juxtapositions that are easily overlooked but visually powerful. Go beyond simple documentation.

Look for moments that are temporary, unexpected, or revealing – images that capture not just a place, but its rhythm, its contrasts, and its human presence.

This category is a standalone award and entries are not considered in selecting the winner of the overall title of Travel Photographer of the Year 2026. However the winning image will be automatically eligible for the Travel Image of the Year 2026 award.

A single image which captures our ‘green planet’. You can go down the environmental route, or nature or simply use the colour green in a travel context. Be creative and original.
