One Shot Category Theme
Every journey is shaped by the people you meet.
Beyond landmarks and landscapes, it is human connection that defines and inspires travel – the faces, stories, and quiet moments that reveal how others live, think, and feel. Every person carries a unique presence; every face holds depth, history, and identity.
This category challenges you to go further than a quick portrait. Anyone can take a photograph of a stranger—but capturing their “essence” requires patience, awareness, and intent.
Look beyond appearance. Seek out character, emotion, and authenticity. Create an image that feels alive – one that invites the viewer to pause, to wonder, and to connect.
Make it more than a portrait. Make it a story in a single frame.
What subjects can you include?
This category is about portraying people with depth and meaning – not just documenting them, but revealing something real.
Your subject might include:
- Portraits that capture genuine emotion, personality, or mood
- Individuals within their environment, offering context to their lives or culture
- Moments of everyday life that feel honest and unposed
- Details – expressions, gestures, or interactions – that hint at a deeper story
- Cultural identity, tradition, or way of life expressed through a person Avoid surface-level snapshots.
Take the time to observe, connect, and understand. Your image should do more than show what someone looks like – it should suggest “who they are”.

This category is a standalone award and entries are not considered in selecting the winner of the overall title of Travel Photographer of the Year 2026. However the winning image will be automatically eligible for the Travel Image of the Year 2026 award.
