Rising Talent Award

Do you want to make a career in photography? Would you like a helping hand to do this and to build that career? This year TPOTY is launching a new category to help aspiring photographers to develop their talent and make the big step into full time photography.

In this category we’re looking for talent. We’re looking for photographers who want to get better and have the drive and enthusiasm to learn and develop, but need support and guidance to become the best they can be. If you’ve dreamt of a life in photography then this is your opportunity to start following that dream.

It’s a category for amateur photographers, semi-pros and people who have started a career in photography within the last two years only.

In a portfolio of 10 images (colour or black & white) we would like you to show us different elements of travel photography – people, landscape, wildlife, nature, underwater, places, architecture, street, food, documentary, fine art. You should include at least three different elements.

The core of this category is to recognise potential talent and help to develop and grow. By entering this category, in addition to prizes, you will be considered for a new mentoring programme coming soon….

The judges will be looking more for potential and talent, rather than polished and accomplished travel photography, so originality and creativity are important. Please remember this is an award for photography NOT an award for digital processing of images afterwards or for AI generated images.

How many images?

Ten image portfolio.

This category is open to photographers aged 19 and above. To enter you must be an amateur photographer, a semi-professional photographer OR a photographer who has been professional for two years or less (and be able to verify this) on the 6th October closing date.

You can enter this category only once.

  • £25 for one 10 image portfolio entry

No! We have always allowed entrants to submit images from their archives – i.e. contemporary photography shot in recent years – and have always said that ‘travel starts when you leave your home’. So it’s your choice. You can travel locally or travel further afield. Entries close on 6th October.

Please see the information on digital manipulation and note that entrants who are shortlisted as finalists will be required to provide the original image files (RAW or jpeg as shot).

No AI generated images will be allowed and any entered will be disqualified.

The 10 winners of this category will each receive £100, plus Radiant Photo imaging software and online photography training.

Special Rising Talent award prize: ALL 10 winners in this portfolio categories will be considered for one of two portfolio reviews by a leading New York photographer’s agent, Frank Meo.

All winners will receive a portfolio review by a TPOTY judge and a place on an Eye for the Light workshop.

Mentoring Scheme: TPOTY is planning to launch a new mentoring programme in the near future. Once this is up and running, at least 3 of the 10 winners of the Rising Talent Award will gain automatic acceptance to this scheme, which will see 5 or 6 photographers come together for 5 days of mentoring in photography, editing, image optimisation, printing, video, marketing, curating, writing and more. We’ll then follow and publish the progress of these mentees for a year, with an exhibition of their work at the end.
